Gardening

This year I was able to use my mother-in-law’s farm to learn to plant more things.  I have learned a lot, and hope to continue learning to grow things.  Here are some things I have learned:

  1. Tilling up a dry ground is hard
I have tilled up a little of the garden area that I am using. I started out bringing in a lot of compost, soil, etc. I would add in horse manure, and throw mulch over the top after I planted in it. This system was easier but a lot more costly. As I expanded the garden, I started to run out of garden money. I realized quickly that bringing in bagged compost and soil was not going to be sustainable for me. I started tilling up the ground in some areas, and I have learned that it is easiest to till it up a couple of days after a good storm. I have also realized my favorite tool for this is called a Mattock (garden ax).
  2. Rabbits like sweet potato vines
I knew when I started gardening over there that there was a high possibility that some of the stuff I was growing would get eaten, whither away, or just plain fail. I was starting in a new spot, with a lot of unknowns. One of the things I did know is there are rabbits that run free on the property. What I did not know what that they would love the sweet potato vines, and the pole beans. I have not seen them attack much else so far, but those they have loved eating.
  3. Fig trees don’t require a lot of maintenance and can even take a little flooding
So… I knew there was a high possibility of flooding in certain parts of the field. With that knowledge I attempted to put the fig trees I planted near where it would flood so that they could get all that good water. I ended up putting one of the trees right where it flooded, in fact, water sat there for at least 3 days.

The Cleanse is over here are some of my thoughts.

I really enjoyed some aspects of the cleanse, it was refreshing in a way. I think my body is used to cleanses somewhat at this point because it was not near as hard as it has been in the past.

We basically ate like gluten-free Vegans without sugar added including honey, and maple syrup. We found some great recipes and I enjoyed making different sauces which I discovered are pretty easy to make. We used a lot of raw cashews for everything from sauces to Lara bar-type snacks. I worked out well the first week of the cleanse and then fell off and only worked out when I went to the gym the second week.
Here are a few of my favorite recipes frome the week:

Those are just a few that we tweaked a couple of times to make many different things. It was a tasty cleanse and we plan to bring some of it into other non-cleanse times as well.

Taking Care of Me

Last night I did something that I had thought of doing for years… I bought an apple watch. This was a hard purchase for me to make for myself. I have wanted it and talked myself out of it so many times. This time as I wanted it I looked at the money I had set aside and I realized I have done good saving and I deserved to do something for myself that would help me reach my goals.

I have already since the watch came in this afternoon, done a couple of workouts, and worked on being mindful of my steps, staying active, and being mindful of my water intake. I have a lot to learn with this new piece of equipment, but I am excited at the possibilities this opens up. Apple Fitness is free for the first 3 months, so my goal is to do something from there 5 days a week.

We are starting a cleanse on Monday and I am looking forward to putting my health at a higher priority than it has been for a bit.

Along with the cleanse I plan to take Plexus products and use my Apple Watch. I will try and weigh myself before we start just to get an idea of the difference it can make to take care of my body.

To my kids, with love

As I am discovering myself this year one of the things that have been on my heart is giving my kids some of my knowledge along the way. This morning as I make dinner in the crockpot and let the bread rise on the counter I am reminded of all I have learned since I became an adult.

Today I am going to share a pork butt (really pork shoulder) recipe that I am making.

Ingredients:

  • 3 lb pork
  • Dry rub ingredients
    • 2 tbsp ground coffee
    • 1 tbsp paprika
    • 1 tsp ground ginger
    • 1 tsp ground mustard
    • 1 tsp ground coriander
    • 1 tbsp brown sugar
    • 1 tbsp salt
  • Braising liquid
    • 1 cup apple cider (we used homemade- spices simmered in apple juice)

Mix dry rub ingredients together pat onto pork and let sit overnight in a covered dish. Add apple cider to crockpot and place pork on top. Cook on low for 8-10 hours. Shred with a fork.

Dinner turned out pretty good. I for sure would have added smoked pepper or something to give it a little kick, but it has a pretty good flavor overall.

Never forget to make a good meal for and with those you love.

Love,

Mom

Forty and Fun

On this day forty years ago I was born. It was not an easy birth, I was early, they needed to take me by c-section. My mom tells me I was in NICU for 1 month, I lost 1 lb in the hospital in that month, and they told my parents to take me home, that was my only hope of surviving.

I think back on what my birth story was, my childhood, and my adult years and I am thankful to be alive, and I know I have a purpose on this earth. I don’t really know what that purpose is, but I plan to use this blog to figure it out.

Forty and Fun

As I go into today, my goal was to not hit snooze, to treat myself, and have fun. I really, really like sleep, so not hitting snooze was a pretty big deal.  I did not get much rest last night, and I had a somewhat early morning.

Today we have a dessert party scheduled for me and I hope it will be fun, and plan to eat lots of sweets and hopefully get to hang out with cool people.

I am listening to a youtube video with Mel Robbins and she is knocking my socks off. The stuff she says is just so raw and real. My biggest takeaway from it is High Five yourself, tell yourself “You have Got This, I Have Your Back.” It is so easy to self-doubt, talk down to ourselves, and say things about ourselves we would never allow to be said about someone we love.

Today love yourself, and have fun!

A Few of My Favorite Things

mini baking set

I started this Sugar Cookie thing that has quickly turned into a passion and joy. I thought I would just try it and be done with it, I asked a friend for her recipes for icing and cookie dough to get me started.

I quickly learned how giving this cookie community is. I have watched youtube, Instagram, and Facebook videos looked at blog posts and so much more.  I would ask questions of the “famous” cookie people and they would respond. These ladies and gentleman are so generous with their time and skill.

I wanted to share a few of my favorite resources with you just in case you have gotten bitten by the decorated cookie bug.

Thank You

Thank you for supporting my passion. I love making cookies and seeing the smiles on peoples faces. I started making cookies in October of last year and fell in love with it, not only can I create a piece of art, it is yummy too!

I think one of my favorite aspects of making cookies for others is getting to take inspiration from them and turning it into edible pieces of art.

One thing that still amazes me is when people say “Your cookies actually taste good too!” Most of my cookies, which are made in my home here in Duncanville, are Vanilla/ Almond flavored. Cookies bring me such joy, that I hope to bring to you.

A thing of beauty is a joy forever.

For the love of the cookie

Here are just a few of the cookies that I got to make over the last 6 months or so. Some are thank you cookies that were given out during a book signing of a friend. I also made cookies for a wedding shower, baby shower, Police appreciation cookies, and one of my favorites were paint your own eye shadow cookies.
